Māori and Pasifika Trades Training (MPTT)

Māori and Pasific ākonga looking to learn a trade can apply for a Māori and Pasifika Trades Training scholarship, which is a government-funded scholarship to cover full fees and course-related costs.

Māori and Pasifika Trades Training Scholarship students are supported at both Whitireia and WelTec by the Tamaiti Whāngai team. 

The Tamaiti Whāngai team will support you with mentoring, goal setting, pastoral and cultural support. You will have the opportunity to get your drivers license, site safe and first aid certificates.

We thank our iwi partners, Te Āti Awa and
Ngāti Toa Rangatira as well as our Pasifika
partner, Mafutaga Faifeau Samoa for the
support they provide to our Māori and Pasifika
Trades Training Scholarship students.

Support we offer

Programme selection advice

  • Not sure what to do or thinking about further study? Contact our Tamaiti Whāngai engagement advisors and have a chat about your options.

Pastoral care

  • If you have any problems - in your study or in your personal life - we can help you.

Job brokers

  • You will have access to our jobs broker service. We will help you find employment.

Mentoring

  • Our Māori and Pasifika mentors will support you throughout the year. We will give you every opportunity to succeed. 

Goal setting

  • We help you set goals and then provide guidance so that you successfully achieve them.  

Social opportunities

  • Have fun at our sports days and social events. Make new friends.

Getting ready for work

  • Prepare for the workforce with the help from our Job Brokers. We can help with CV's, job applications, site safety and first aid certificates. 

Community support

  • You will benefit from our connections with iwi Ngāti Toa Rangatira and Te Āti Awa (including Tamaiti Whāngai), the Pasifika community, Industry Training Organisations and employers.

End of course ceremonies

  • Celebrate your success at graduation with your friends and whānau. 

Drivers license

  • Te Rūnanga o Te Āti Awa provide our students with the opportunity to get their drivers licence.

Scholarship criteria

You need to meet the entry criteria for the programme you are enrolling in and be:

  • Of Māori or Pasific descent
  • 16-40 years old at the start of your study
  • A New Zealand citizen or permanent resident
  • Able to meet the entry requirements for your programme

We want you to be passionate and show that you are motivated to succeed.
