For students in the Joint Bachelor of Information Technology programme, studying at Whitireia and WelTec is about more than earning a degree. It's an opportunity to experience a new culture, build global connections, and grow both personally and professionally.
In 2026, we welcomed students from our partner institutions in China, Xi'an Kedagaoxin University and Hunan Institute of Engineering, to complete the final stage of their studies in Aotearoa New Zealand. Many chose the programme to strengthen their English language skills, and gain industry-ready experience. As Jianyang explains, "Studying internationally has helped to broaden my horizons and gain practical experience."
While adapting to a new country and studying in English has brought challenges, students describe the experience as rewarding. The transition was made easier through the support of tutors, international support staff, and classmates.
"The international staff and course tutors were always accessible, patient, and able to help," says Yusen.
For some, previous contact with Whitireia and WelTec tutors and exposure to New Zealand teaching styles made the transition even smoother. According to Siyu, “we had already familiarised ourselves with the class mode in New Zealand.”
Through hands-on projects, group assignments, and industry-focused learning, students have developed confidence and professional knowledge.
Ziqi says, "I have enjoyed working on practical IT projects and applying what I learned to real world problems."
Life beyond the classroom has been equally valuable. Students have embraced new experiences, built friendships from around the world, and developed greater independence and resilience. Ruifeng says that living overseas has strengthened his self-reliance. He also highlights the wider impact of the experience, saying it has “broadened my global perspective and significantly improved my English communication skills.”
Cross-cultural awareness, and greater self-confidence is what Yusu has valued, adding that the global perspective and adaptability gained through the experience will be “invaluable assets in any future career or academic pursuit.”
For these students, the experience has provided a strong foundation for postgraduate study and future careers in IT, while building the confidence and adaptability needed to thrive in a global environment. Their advice to future students? Be curious. Ask questions. Embrace the experience!
About the programme
Whitireia and WelTec partner with tertiary institutions to create international learning pathways. Through the Joint Bachelor of Information Technology programme, students complete the early stages of their degree at their home institution and then can choose to come to Aotearoa New Zealand to finish their studies.
The programme combines the academic foundations students build in China with practical, applied learning in Aotearoa, giving students valuable international experience while preparing them for further study and careers in an increasingly connected world.
