What inspired you to study business?

I used to own a café and a retail shop which gave me a good background understanding of how business works in New Zealand. I decided I wanted to dive deeper into the business sector and learn new skills that I can use for the rest of my life.

I chose the accounting strand because I wanted to learn something that’s in demand that I can take anywhere.

Why did you choose WelTec as your place of study?

I knew that I would be able to get wrap-around support.

English is my second language, and my tutors always went above and beyond to make sure I had a good understanding of the course content. I also had a lot of help from the student support team in the WelTec learning commons who helped me grammar check my assignments.

I want everyone to know if English is your second language not to worry, WelTec can support you.

What skills did you learn at WelTec that help you in your role today?

I learned MYOB system which is the accounting software I now use day-to-day. This made me a lot more confident stepping into my role as Accounts Administrator.

In my last year at WelTec we also learned a lot about sustainability development for New Zealand business. This helped me to better understand my workplace, Commonsense Organics, where sustainability is one of our key values.

What do you enjoy about accounting?

I really enjoy being part of a team – knowing that I'm supporting my colleagues and helping the business run smoothly is really satisfying for me. I like to match up all the numbers, make everything tidy and ensure our suppliers get paid on time.

Do you think accounting is an important skill to have?

Accounting knowledge is useful no matter what industry you’re in. For example, everybody has to pay tax – my accounting skills helped me to fully understand how tax works and when I need to pay it.

I would encourage everyone to gain skills in business and accounting, it’s a skill that crosses over almost every other industry. You just have to trust yourself and never give up!
