After years in the fast-paced world of hospitality, Kimi Rere was ready for something new. Eager for a fresh challenge, she decided to return to study, choosing the Business Admin programmes at Whitireia and WelTec. Kimi’s commitment to her studies didn’t go unnoticed, and before graduating she was offered an exciting new role. Today, she’s still at Whitireia and WelTec, but now as the full-time administrator for Te Wānanga Māori.
Transitioning to study
Kimi was nervous to return to study, however her experience in the hospitality industry provided her with a foundation of skills that translated well in the classroom. Kimi’s ability to work under pressure, multi-task in a fast-paced environment, and engage with a wide range of people all helped her succeed. In turn, Kimi felt confident, and progressed through her studies with ease. Studying close to home made it easier for her to balance learning with everyday life.
“I really enjoyed studying in the classroom with my classmates. We built bonds and encouraged and supported each other. Our tutors were the best. They were patient, kind, and very resourceful. I enjoyed being the person my classmates felt confident in asking for help”
Gaining real-world business skills
In the Business Admin programmes, ākonga gain the skills to provide administrative services and use computer applications to undertake a wide range of administration tasks. They learn how to perform financial calculations, and use software to maintain administrative systems and create specialist documents. Students also develop their communication skills to a professional standard.
“Everything I learnt in my studies I now use in my role as an administrator for Te Wānanga Māori.”

Life as an Administrator at Te Wānanga Māori
The day-to-day work in Kimi’s role is varied. She schedules meetings, arranges room bookings and assists in updating the course outlines and programme handbooks. During enrolment periods she also prepares enrolment packs, checks ākonga enrolments, transfers, or withdrawals.
“Manaakitanga is an important part of who we are at Te Wānanga, so ensuring our ākonga and kaimahi feel welcome each time they enter our space is important. My favourite part of my role is being able to support our ākonga and see them progress through their study. Last year it was a privilege to be a part of their pōwaiwai and whakapōtaetanga.”
Kimi has taken on further responsibilities through assisting with the coordination of activities and events like Te Wiki o Te Reo Māori, the Te Reo Māori Whakapōtaetanga, Bachelor of Nursing Māori Pōwaiwai, and Matariki. Additionally, she has helped Te Wānanga Māori launch a popular Kapa Haka roopu (group), which welcomes ākonga and kaimahi from across the Porirua campus.
What’s Next
Kimi is always looking for opportunities to advance in her career. Kimi studied Te Reo on campus last year and considers herself only to be a beginner but wants to continue her Te Reo journey and communicate more with their colleagues, friends, and whanau.
When asked what she would say to someone considering studying Business Admin, Kimi said, “Go for it! With more people and businesses becoming dependent on technology, jobs now rely on people to know basic to advanced level computer skills. So, take the opportunity to keep up and learn the skills that will help you advance in your career prospects.”
