What inspired you to study enrolled nursing?

My passion for nursing heightened when unfortunately, my kids got sick. They were in and out of hospital a lot and seeing the nurses give such good care and attention to their patients really inspired me. My sister also studied at Whitireia in 1992 to become a registered nurse and I always looked up to her.

Six months after my son passed away, I knew I needed to start something new. I began looking into my options and decided to take a leap and went to Whitireia.

Did you feel supported at Whitireia?

The support I received at Whitireia was second to none. From the tutors to academic support at the library, there was always lots of help and resources available.

Also, the family support that I received – I've got quite a big family unit and it wouldn’t have worked without everybody banding together.

As someone who had been out of the workforce for a long time, was stepping into the healthcare industry daunting?

Being able to do work placements really helped. I was able to get some part-time work as a Healthcare Assistant through my first placement which set me up to begin my nursing career. I think healthcare assistant work is important experience to have before you become an Enrolled Nurse.

What does a day in your life as an Enrolled Nurse look like?

My shift always starts with a handover in the morning. I sit down and do my daily planner, writing down all the things I need to do for my patients throughout the day. It’s my job to make sure they take their medications on time, note down observations and prepare them for anything else they might need, for example if they have physio. I also assist with their personal cares like helping them get ready for the morning.

What do you love about your job?

Being able to make a real difference and helping people become the best they can be. A huge part of it is seeing people regain the things they’ve lost and being part of that journey is really special.

What kind of personal attributes make a great Enrolled Nurse?

Someone who is compassionate, empathetic and loves to help people. If you’re determined, nursing is a great career and there is a lot of support at Whitireia to help you achieve your goals.
