Whitireia and WelTec have welcomed more than 500 new ākonga beginning their studies in business, construction, creativity, engineering, health and wellbeing, hospitality, information technology, professional practice and Te Wānanga Māori.

Held in partnership with Te Rūnanganui o Te Āti Awa in Petone and Ngāti Toa Rangatira in Porirua, the Pōwhiri and Mihi Whakatau marked the beginning of a new journey for ākonga taking the first steps toward their future.

In her welcome address, Dr Leanne Ivil, Operations Lead and Director Teaching and Learning, spoke of the opportunity and adventure that lies ahead.

“You may not realise it yet, but you are embarking on an adventure. One of learning, of challenge, of meeting new people, and experiencing new perspectives,” said Dr Ivil.

“Be open to growth, to hard work, and to building friendships. Education is not a journey done alone. Surround yourself with the people here to support you, because together we are stronger.”

Following the formal welcome, ākonga connected over shared kai and kōrero with peers and kaimahi (staff), forming connections that will support them throughout their time at Whitireia and WelTec.

As Trimester Two begins, Whitireia and WelTec look forward to walking alongside ākonga on their journey of learning, growth, and future success.
