Whitireia and WelTec welcome the Government’s announcement confirming the institution’s return to regional governance from 1 January 2027.

“For more than 120 years, Whitireia and WelTec have stood alongside industry, employers, and communities as a trusted partner,” says Dr Leanne Ivil, Whitireia and WelTec Operations Lead. “We are recognised for our collaboration, responsiveness, and commitment to supporting ākonga (student) success. This announcement affirms the strength and value of the work we continue to lead.”

Whitireia and WelTec maintain enduring connections across Te Whanganui a Tara. Partnerships with iwi, employers, community groups, and industry bodies actively inform programme design and guide outcomes for ākonga. Dr Ivil says these relationships remain a defining strength of the organisation. “The skills our ākonga gain are enhanced through the partnerships we have built, ensuring our programmes remain relevant, future focused, and aligned with regional needs.”

Achieving strong outcomes for ākonga remains at the heart of Whitireia and WelTec’s work. Dr Ivil says the institution is well positioned to continue delivering for learners, communities, and the wider region.
