Whitireia and WelTec are proud to celebrate hairdressing tutor Michelle (Shelly) McAuley, who has been appointed as the Hair Supervisor for the 2025 World of WearableArt Show: RISE.

This prestigious role recognises Shelly’s outstanding expertise and her strong, ongoing connection to the hairdressing industry. WOW is internationally recognised as one of Aotearoa New Zealand’s most spectacular creative events, bringing together world-class design, performance and artistry.

As Hair Supervisor, Shelly will direct and deliver hairstyles for all performers, ensuring they are both striking and durable under the demands of a large-scale production. She will collaborate with WOW’s makeup and costume teams while guiding professional stylists and student interns throughout the season.

“WOW is such an iconic event, and to be trusted to lead the hairdressing team for 2025 is incredibly exciting,” says Shelly. “It’s a chance to showcase creativity on a world stage and bring my years of experience into such a dynamic environment. I’m especially thrilled that some of our ākonga will be part of the show and experience the scale and energy of WOW behind the scenes.”

Joining Shelly backstage will be a group of Whitireia and WelTec hairdressing and makeup artistry ākonga, selected for WOW’s internship programme. Working alongside professionals, they will help prepare performers with bold, stage-ready hair and makeup, gaining hands-on experience in one of Aotearoa New Zealand’s most high-profile creative events.
