Whitireia and WelTec host pre-Christmas pop-in info evenings in Porirua and Petone

With NCEA exams coming to an end, many school leavers are turning their minds to ‘what next?’ for the coming year. Whitireia and WelTec are opening their doors to anyone interested in finding out more about programmes offered in the Wellington region.

Two pop-in information events will be held this week, the first in Petone on Wednesday November 30th followed by one in Porirua the next day, Thursday December 1st.

Representatives from programmes offered at Whitireia and WelTec will be available to talk to attendees about what they are interested in, or to answer any questions they may have.

During the evening, tutors and support team members from Whitireia and WelTec will share information on how learning can be tailored to be flexible around work or family commitments and what opportunities might be available across Te Pūkenga network.

“We do not want people to let their school experience, journey or current achievements dictate what they are able to achieve in the future,” says Mark Oldershaw, Manahautū, Whitireia and WelTec. “We have a number of different ways we can support learners’ academic achievement,” says Mark. “We also offer very flexible learning opportunities, so if people need to fit learning in around work or family commitments - we can make that happen.”

Serena Rose Parsons graduated with the New Zealand Certificate in Makeup and Skincare (Introduction) and New Zealand Certificate in Makeup Artistry and is now a makeup and special effects artist, who has worked on Avatar, Mr Corman, a Keith Urban music video, Antipodes, NZ series The Māori Sidesteps and World of Wearable Art.

Serena started with the level 3 programme before progressing onto level 4.

“I never thought I could have a career in makeup until I went to an open day,” says Serena. “The tutors were so passionate about what they taught and the campus was an amazing study environment. I would go back and study at WelTec all over again because it got me to where I am today.”
